Partnerships
"It takes a village to raise a child" - African Proverb
Important parts of the Center School District village are the many partnerships with community organizations that support our students and staff. Faith communities, businesses, civic groups, non-profit organizations and dedicated individuals all come together to provide invaluable services for our schools.
Center School District partners with Center alumni and the Missouri Department of Conservation to replace CHS trees infested by Emerald Ash Borer.
Conservation to replace CHS trees infested by Emerald Ash Borer. All of the trees in the Center High School parking lot were one species – ash. Emerald ash borer (EAB) entered the U.S. in 2002 and Kansas City in 2012. Once infested, ash trees quickly become brittle and dangerous. Twelve trees were selected to be removed and replaced by 24 trees of five different species. Two Center alumni, Chris Cain with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and Zach Williams of BrightView Landscape Services, collaborated with district operations to secure funding and complete the work in December. They also spoke with CHS students about career opportunities in the green industry. Peggy Mulvihill, reading teacher at CHS, used the project to connect students to tree literature before they helped plant a bur oak at the west end of the building. All can look forward to purple and white flowering trees this spring. In addition to beautifying, these trees will help provide shade, reduce stormwater runoff, and improve air quality for the Center community. This project was made possible by reimbursement from MDC Community Forestry Cost Share.
