Inclement Weather Updates
As we approach the winter months, we want to keep you informed about how potential inclement weather may impact our school schedule. With the potential for cold or snowy weather getting closer, we want to remind you of our plans for Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days.
Due to a recent provision in Senate Bill 727, our district revised the 2024-2025 academic calendar, which was approved by the Board of Education in June. This calendar includes 36 hours (5 days) designated for AMI. These AMI hours allow students to continue learning remotely during cold weather. Additionally, the original calendar stated that the first snow day would be a traditional snow day rather than an AMI day. This is incorrect. The first snow day will be an AMI day.
District leaders will decide by 5:30 a.m. if students will have an AMI day. Once the decision to cancel school is made, we will notify staff and parents via text, email, and phone. We use the information you provided us during registration for the email addresses and phone numbers for emergency notifications.
If school is canceled, we will post a message on our website (with a big banner on the home page) and our social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, and X—formerly Twitter). We will also share the cancellation notice with all Kansas City media outlets.
We will only post the messages above for a cancellation or delayed start. If there is no message, school will be held as usual. If your contact information has changed since enrollment, please provide the updated contact information to your school. We will also send out a test message. If you do not receive it, please get in touch with your child’s school.
During the school day: If a significant weather event occurs while school is in session, administrators will make the best-informed decision and determine if an early release is necessary. Decisions to release early will happen before 1:00 p.m.
